Wimbledon 2010 – Men’s Preview

Wimbledon is here again. After another interesting tennis year. Will Roger Federer dominate on a London grass again or will Rafael Nadal win his second Wimbledon title? Or will it be a tournament of a totally new tennis star? Well, let’s take a closer look at a men’s draw.
Roger Federer, seeded as No.1, seems to have potentially easy opponents in the first week compared to his greatest rivals such as Nadal, Murray or Djokovic. The first rival, Alejandro Falla whose Roger beat a week ago in Halle, will probably be an easy walk. as well as Nicolas Massu, the former winner of Olympic tournament. Then he could get Janko Tipsarevic or Tommy Robredo in the third round, and Jurgen Melzer, the semifinalist of French Open 2010, in the fourth round. The second week, however, is expected to be more difficult. The potential quarterfinal opponent against Federer seems to be well playing Tomas Berdych or Stanislas Wawrinka who played great match against Murray last year and definitely likes playing on grass. In this quarter is also Nikolay Davydenko but as he is not keen on playing on grass surface he probably lose in earlier rounds. Event if Federer will pass through I think Berdych (or Wawrinka) will take him 1 set.

In the second quarter of the draw, which is in my opinion the most balanced part, there are more favorites. Djokovic, Cilic, Hewitt, Roddick and we can’t forget Fish who played really well a week ago in Queens where he reached the final. Personally I think Djokovic will lose Hewitt who will surely have a great self-confidence after beating Federer in Halle. What about Roddick, who should go into querterfinal, however Fish could complicate this walk a little bit. In quarterfinal, Roddick will defeat Hewitt, just like last year. If we take a look at statistics, Roddick has not lost a match on grass against Hewitt.

The third quarter contains names like Murray, Verdasco, Tsonga or Querrey. Murray is definitely the greatest favorite of this part. I think he will have the first big problems with Querrey who played excellent in Queens. If Querrey plays just like in Queens, I think he has a chance to win this match. In quarterfinal, Murray or Querrey could face up Tsonga which should not be a big barrier as Tsonga’s performances are not consistent this year.

Getting to the last part of Wimbledon draw with Rafa Nadal. If Nadal want to win Wimbledon he will have to do a lot of hard work. He has probably the most difficult opponents on his road to final. In the second round James Blake will probably be his rival. Even if he is no as good as he was 2 or 3 year ago, I think he is a tough opponent for the 2nd round. In the 3rd round Ernests Gulbis could be his opponent but the 27th-seeded Latvian has been forced to pull out with a hamstring injury which is definitely good news for Nadal. Then, in the last 16 he could face up Isner who improved his game in the last months. If he could rely on his first serve it could be a interesting match, however I don’t think John could beat Rafa in 3 sets. In quarterfinal Nadal will probably get Soderling who surely take Rafa a set but I am not sure if he manage to eliminate Rafa.

So in semifinal I expect this 4 guys: Federer vs Roddick and Nadal vs Murray. I think Federer and Murray will go into final, however the legendary Federer vs Nadal final is also possible even if less probable. And who is going to win the Wimbledon title? Well, Federer is still the best grass player of nowadays :)

Finally, I would like to express my predictions in a table:

Semifinal 1: Federer vs Roddick
Semifinal 2: Murray vs Nadal
Young Gun: Querrey
Flop: Cilic, Davydenko
