This year, the mens part of the US Open series is composed of 6 tournaments. Let’s take a closer look at them.

1. Atlanta Tennis Championships

Date:

July 19 – 25

Place:

Atlanta, Georgia

Category:

ATP 250

Prize Money:

$ 531,000

Last year winner:

N/A

This is a new place this year and many players are looking forward to it. The top favorite for this tournament is surely Andy Roddick who was given the wild card for the last moment. Even if this tournament was not on the ATP calendar before, Andy already has one title from Atlanta champ. However, at this time (2001) the tournament was played on clay.

2. Farmers Classic

Date:

Place:

LA, California

$ 619,500

Last year winner:

Sam Querrey

This tournament is preffered mainly by American players or American residents. Even if the category is just ATP 250 I am sure there will be a good tennis as for Americans hard is a favorite surface and they like playing on it.

3. Legg Mason Tennis Classic

Date:

Washington, DC

Category:

ATP 500

Prize Money:

$ 1,165,500

Last year winner:

Juan Martin del Potro

As we are heading off US Open, the tournaments are becoming more and more interesting and prize money are increasing as well. It is probable that more of top 20 players will be compete here as this is the last rehearsal before Masters tournaments.

4. Rogers Masters

Date:

Toronto, Canada

ATP Masters 1000

$ 2,430,000

Last year winner:

Rafael Nadal

Great city, great atmosphere, many fans. That’s Canada Masters. It is also the first US Open Series Masters of this year. There is no doubt there will be all of the top ATP players here (if they are in good physical condition) as lots of points and also lots of money will be distributed at this place.

5. Western & Southern Financial Group Masters

Date:

Roger Federer

Another masters series tournament. Defending champ is Roger Federer and I hope he will be playing as good as last year since this was very good performance from him last year in Cinci.

6. Pilot Pen Tennis

Date:

$ 663,750

Last year winner:

Fernando Verdasco

The last tournament before US Open. Some players will probably try to upgrade their form in Yale, however the top players will be resting and prepare individually for the last grandslam of the year.

Wow, this was an unbelievable match! On Tuesday, June 22nd, a tennis thriller between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut begun at the small court No.18 which has the capacity of about 700. This was to be a standart match without a favorite. However, this was not a standart match! It was suspended 2 times and these 2 guys had been fighting on the court 11 hours and 5 minutes before Isner threaded a backhand pass up the line and won this epic match. The match which will probably be the longest tennis match for a very very long time.
By the way, the final result was: 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 70-68.

Thanks to the fifth set, lasting 8 hours and 11 minutes, this match begun the longest match ever. It exceeded the previous longest match, the 2004 French Open duel between Frenchmen Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement, by a incredible 4 hours and 32 minutes!
The combined ace stopped at 215, with Isner hammering down 112, just nine more than Frenchman on 103. Both of them broke the previous record of the highest number of aces in one match, 77 aces hold by Ivo Karlovic.

The exhaustion was enormous:

After the match-point, John Isner was like winning the Grandslam trophy:

Finally, you can look at the statistics from the match:
Match duration: 11 hours, five minutes
Fifth set duration: Eight hours, 11 minutes
Total number of games: 183
Fifth set number of games: 138
Total number of points: 980
Isner aces: 112
Mahut aces: 103
Combined aces: 215
Isner winners: 246
Mahut winners: 244

Last year, the Queen would have attended Wimbledon if Andy Murray went into finals. But Murray lost Andy Roddick so there was no royal attendance. However, this year everything changed. Despite the fact the Queen Elizabeth II is not a tennis fan she decided to visit the most significant tennis tournament – once again after incredible 33 years.
This year it was the first time that the monarch had taken her place in the Royal Box since her Silver Jubilee Year in 1977, when she watched Virginia Wade clinch the ladies’ singles title.

Arriving 2 hours earlier, she took a walk around the Wimbledon campus. At first she said hello to ball girls and ball boys.

Afterwards, the Queen Elizabeth II was then taken to the Millennium Building where a number of top players were waiting to be presented to her.

Maybe some of you are wondering where the world No.1, Rafael Nadal, is. Of course, he was also invited to this ceremony but he did not come as he was focusing on the upcoming match. As he said: “Today is a game day. I have my things to do.”
After these official ceremonies, the British Queen took her place in the Royal Box at 1pm looking forward the match between Andy Murray and Jarrko Nieminen. She was wearing a turquoise summer coat and matching brimmed hat with white trim. Of course, there was the huge and spontaneous standing ovation from the Centre Court crowd as the Queen entered the Royal Box.

As the old tradition says, the players were expected to bow towards the Royal Box before their match.

The Queen’s attendance is really a big social occasion which gives the huge public interest what you can see on next photos, too.

Finally, one interesting fact which you probably haven’t known: The father of the Queen Eliyabeth II, George VI, was a keen tennis player and competed in the men’s doubles tournament here in 1926, the year of the Queen’s birth.

“It was a bit of a shock. It wasn’t something I was prepared for.” These were the words Federer said after the match. Maybe it was not such a big surprise if it had not been a first round match in Wimbledon, the tournament of Roger Federer. But it was a first round match and it was Wimbledon!
Personally it was also a shock for me, as a Federer fan, to see Roger losing 0-2 sets against Alejandro Falla. You don’t know this name? It is no surprise. This Columbian is on the 60th position in the rankings and he doesn’t even play the Masters 1000 series tournaments. By the way, he played against Roger 4 times before this match and he did not win either 1 set in these matches. Last time when they played in Wimbledon Roger won after his huge domination 6-1 6-2 6-0!

However this match was different. It was very thrilling event. When Falla was serving for the match I thought it was over. But then something changed. Falla realized he could make a tennis shock of the year and became nervous. On the other hand, Roger used all his experience from previous matches and relied on his psychic. Thanks to these factors he broke Falla and won the 4th set. After that, everything went easy in the 5th set. Roger dominated, won 6-0 in the final set and went into 2nd round. But it was really a great match.
By the way, here is the final score: 5-7 4-6 6-4 7-6(1) 6-0

Wimbledon is here again. After another interesting tennis year. Will Roger Federer dominate on a London grass again or will Rafael Nadal win his second Wimbledon title? Or will it be a tournament of a totally new tennis star? Well, let’s take a closer look at a men’s draw.
Roger Federer, seeded as No.1, seems to have potentially easy opponents in the first week compared to his greatest rivals such as Nadal, Murray or Djokovic. The first rival, Alejandro Falla whose Roger beat a week ago in Halle, will probably be an easy walk. as well as Nicolas Massu, the former winner of Olympic tournament. Then he could get Janko Tipsarevic or Tommy Robredo in the third round, and Jurgen Melzer, the semifinalist of French Open 2010, in the fourth round. The second week, however, is expected to be more difficult. The potential quarterfinal opponent against Federer seems to be well playing Tomas Berdych or Stanislas Wawrinka who played great match against Murray last year and definitely likes playing on grass. In this quarter is also Nikolay Davydenko but as he is not keen on playing on grass surface he probably lose in earlier rounds. Event if Federer will pass through I think Berdych (or Wawrinka) will take him 1 set.

In the second quarter of the draw, which is in my opinion the most balanced part, there are more favorites. Djokovic, Cilic, Hewitt, Roddick and we can’t forget Fish who played really well a week ago in Queens where he reached the final. Personally I think Djokovic will lose Hewitt who will surely have a great self-confidence after beating Federer in Halle. What about Roddick, who should go into querterfinal, however Fish could complicate this walk a little bit. In quarterfinal, Roddick will defeat Hewitt, just like last year. If we take a look at statistics, Roddick has not lost a match on grass against Hewitt.

The third quarter contains names like Murray, Verdasco, Tsonga or Querrey. Murray is definitely the greatest favorite of this part. I think he will have the first big problems with Querrey who played excellent in Queens. If Querrey plays just like in Queens, I think he has a chance to win this match. In quarterfinal, Murray or Querrey could face up Tsonga which should not be a big barrier as Tsonga’s performances are not consistent this year.

Getting to the last part of Wimbledon draw with Rafa Nadal. If Nadal want to win Wimbledon he will have to do a lot of hard work. He has probably the most difficult opponents on his road to final. In the second round James Blake will probably be his rival. Even if he is no as good as he was 2 or 3 year ago, I think he is a tough opponent for the 2nd round. In the 3rd round Ernests Gulbis could be his opponent but the 27th-seeded Latvian has been forced to pull out with a hamstring injury which is definitely good news for Nadal. Then, in the last 16 he could face up Isner who improved his game in the last months. If he could rely on his first serve it could be a interesting match, however I don’t think John could beat Rafa in 3 sets. In quarterfinal Nadal will probably get Soderling who surely take Rafa a set but I am not sure if he manage to eliminate Rafa.

So in semifinal I expect this 4 guys: Federer vs Roddick and Nadal vs Murray. I think Federer and Murray will go into final, however the legendary Federer vs Nadal final is also possible even if less probable. And who is going to win the Wimbledon title? Well, Federer is still the best grass player of nowadays

Finally, I would like to express my predictions in a table:

Semifinal 1:

 Federer vs Roddick

Semifinal 2:

 Murray vs Nadal

Young Gun:

 Querrey

Flop:

 Cilic, Davydenko

The traditions like strawberries with cream or strict white dresses make this tournament so special. Additionally, the specific grass surface is also very popular among players and fans (especially Roger Federer fans).
Regardless who will be the winner of this perfect championship I hope it will be such a great performance just like in 2008 or 2009…

I am sure some of you are of the opinion that US Open is the best tournament in the world. I also think it is a great championship (however not the best for me). But what makes it so special? I try answer this uneasy question.

At first, US Open, it is New York. And who doesn’t like New York? It is such a great city…When talking about US Open I have to mention Artur Ashe Stadium. It is the largest tennis stadium which has ever been build for tennis. Its capacity is more than 24,000 people which is just enormous number. If someone was interested, the second largest stadium is in Indian Wells (about 16000 people), the other Grand Slams are behind…

This is also one of the factors why US Open is in the group of the most visited tennis events. Last year 700,000 fans came to see the performances of Federer, Nadal and other players.

Hi, I would like to welcome you to my new blog about tennis.

As I was searching some good tennis site on the net, I was not very succesful. And that is one of the reasons why I decided to establish this new blog. I will try to write about all concerning professional tennis, especially ATP, but also WTA. As it is a blog, my posts will be subjective. If you don’t agree with my opinion, just write it to the comment section
So that’all for now, hope you will like this site and you’ll be active users of this blog.
